About Russians

Vyacheslav Nikonov

If you live somewhere in the “West”, you may often hear or read something bad about Russians. What you hear and read is mostly “something like truth”.  Mostly these “news” are presented in a way, so that they cause bad opinnion about Russia. I personally don’t like it.

Therefore I found the following citation interesting, funny and truth. Vyacheslav Nikonov, a prominent Russian commentator, has quoted his Canadian friend, who came up with the following explanation of Russophobia:

The main problem is that these Russians have white skin. If they had been green, or pink, or came from Mars…or had
flowers sticking out of their ears, then everybody would have said – well, these people are
different, like Turks, or Chinese, or Japanese. We have no questions about the Japanese. They
are different, their civilisation is different. But these Russians … they are white but they have
totally different brains … which is thoroughly suspicious.

I don’t really feel that much russophobia in the UK

The British have happily bought Lada cars and watch RT when it is interesting.

Maybe we and the media have found other things to be scared of. After all, as you say, Russians dont look different and in a world of internet and TV, muslims or chinese make much more likely people to be scared of (stupid but true)

In the UK the media stereotype of Russians is of the heroes of chernobyl or of Stalingrad and some worrying about gas supplies.

How do Russians see the UK I wonder
As a land of drunks and hooligans and a poisonous satellite of the USA (sadly partly true) of tea drinkers and culture, museums and cricket (also slightly true)

It is not my point to say that there is so much phobia somewhere. We all have different phobias and mass media love to play with that. However I just found very interesting that short explanation about why Russians sometimes get misunderstood…
Then we automatically forget that (maybe be cause we same race in the west) Russian mentality differs a lot of the west mainstream. On some “ever questions” many Russians would give answers you have not expected to hear them from mainstream Europeans.

Sorry I don’t understand what a “ever question” is
Could you give an example please

I mean philosophical questions about life + questions about practical part of it ;)

One prominent(philosophic)is: Meaning of life.
